~*~*~~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

She was sitting in her seat quietly minding her own business, consumed in her own grief as she winged her way towards New York.  Her heart was in pieces as she thought of her dear sister.  She had been so brave and fought for so long, battling her cancer to the very end.  However, there was nothing more that could be done and she finally succumbed slipping silently out of her life forever.  She regretted not being by her sister’s side in those final hours, not being there to give her comfort.

The tears spilled quickly and silently down her soft cheeks as she caressed the bracelet on her wrist.  Half a heart shaped charm hung from it the other half on the bracelet her sister had.  She cried harder remember the gift her sister had given her before she left for Chicago.  She had made her so many promises and it stung her heart that they would now always remain unfulfilled.  She wiped at the tears on her cheek doing little good with her bare hand, when a soft voice broke through her thoughts.

“Miss,” came the rich voice.  She looked up to him standing there, the man she had once deemed in her mind to be walking perfection, “I’m sorry to intrude,” he said softly, “But I thought you could use this,” she looked at his hand to see a plan white handkerchief grasped within his fingers.

“Thank you,” she said taking it from him, “That’s very kind,”

“Are you going to be all right?” he asked softly.

“I’m not really sure,” she said wiping her eyes.

“Forgive me if I’m being forward but, I have this strange affliction.  I hate to see a beautiful woman cry,” he said, “May I join you?  That is if you are not with someone,”

“No,” she said, “I’m alone, please,” she said motioning to the empty seat next to her.

“So,” he said sitting next to her, “I take it this trip is not pleasure,”

“Hardly,” she said, “Funeral,”

“Oh,” he said looking somewhat embarrassed, “I’m terribly sorry, perhaps I should leave,”

“No,” she said, “Really it’s fine.  It’s just this was all kind of last minute.  I’m still sort of in shock,”

“Would you like to talk about it?” he said looking at her, “I’m a great listener,”

“I don’t want to burden you with my problems Mr. Fehr,” she said addressing him for the first time.

“Ah,” he smiled, “So you do know who I am,”

“Guilty,” she said.

“Then please,” he smiled, “Call me Oded, and you are?”

“Kay,” she said, “It’s short for Kayla,”

“Kayla, that a beautiful name,” he said, “So are you staying in New York,”

“Yes,” she said, “That’s where my family lives.  I moved to Chicago about five years ago.  I work as a paralegal in a law firm there,”

“Wow,” he said, “And here I am a humble actor,”

“You’re a big star,” she said.

“Who is currently without a job,” he said.

“Oh,” she said bringing her hand to her mouth, “I forgot about Presidio Med being canceled,”

“Did you watch it?” he asked her.

“Yes,” she said, “I taped every episode they aired.  To be quite honest I wasn’t terribly upset when it was canceled.  No offense but I did not like the way they developed your character,”

“Really?” he said leaning in closer to her, “What didn’t you like?”

“You committing adultery for one,” she said looking at him, “I mean, you just seem like too nice of a guy in real life to do something that sleazy.  Not to mention Nick seemed sort of spineless,”

“How so?”

“Well I mean if you love someone enough to move half way around the world for them you should have the balls to just lay it on the line.  Instead of pussyfooting around with Rae he should have just said listen, I love you, I want to be with you.  It’s me or Shawn let me know or I’m on the next plane back to Athens and it’s over,”

“You think that’s what killed the show?” he asked.

“That and your chemistry with Dana Delaney left a lot to be desired.  It seemed as if you were the only one bringing any emotion to the scenes between you,” she said.

“Hmm,” he said rubbing his chin, “Interesting,”

“Personally I liked your Frank Donovan character much better.  He was strong and self confidant,” she said, “A little arrogant but he was starting to melt a bit before the show got canceled.  I think that was bad timing more then anything given September 11th.  I mean I will admit the writing was a bit weak but I think if it had been given more time it would have improved,” he simply smiled at her, “Dear God, I’m running off at the mouth.  I apologize,”

“Don’t,” he said, “I like getting this kind of feed back, tell me did you see Deuce Bigalow?”

“I have it on DVD,” she said, “Now that was a funny movie,”

“You enjoyed that one?”

“Immensely,” she said, “You were very funny.  You should be more comedy,”

“I’ve thought about.  Actually Rob is working on a sequel to Deuce,”

“Are you going to be in it?” she asked.

“I think so,” he said, “I don’t know, do you think the world would except Antoine with short hair?”

“If you show your butt again they won’t care if you’re bald,” she laughed.  He smiled his mega watt smile at her as she blushed, “I’m sorry,”

“Don’t be,” he said, “You’re laughing, that’s much better then when I first saw you,” she got a serious look on her face then, “I didn’t mean to bring you down again,”

“No,” she said, “It’s all right,” she was silent for a moment, “I’m going to my sister’s funeral in New York.  I was just thinking how mad she’d be if she knew I had met you.  She was a fan as well,”

“If you don’t mind my asking, how did she pass?”

“Cancer,” she said, “Last year I got a phone call from my mother.  She said she had called Jillian, my sister and that they were talking when all of a sudden Jill started acting really weird.  My mom said she just sat down the phone and she could hear her wandering around the apartment but she couldn’t get her to come back to the phone.  She could hear her talking as if she was in school or something.  She called my brother and sent him over to Jill’s apartment.  She was still acting really strange so he took her to the hospital.  They thought she had a stroke but after running tests they discovered she had a brain tumor,” she got quite then as she looked at her bracelet.

“I’m very sorry,” he said, “Cancer is a horrible disease,”

“She fought it for over a year.  She got radiation treatments, took all sorts of drugs and everything to fight it.  She was put in hospice care a few months ago,” she said as a tear slid down her cheek, “I kept meaning to come back and see her but I just couldn’t get away from work.  I’m not looking forward to seeing my family.  I feel bad enough without my mother coming down on me,” she let out a sigh as her fingers played with her bracelet once more.

“That’s beautiful,” he said reaching for her wrist, “Silver?”

“Platinum,” she said, “My sister bought it for me before I moved.  Her bracelet has the other half of the heart,”

“That’s very sweet,” he said fingering the charm as he held her wrist, “What’s the saying on here?”

“When they’re together it reads, “Love is like a violin.  The music may stop now and then, but the strings remain forever -- June Masters Bacher.”  My sister played the violin,”

“I take it you were very close,” he said looking at her.

“She was my only sister,” she said, “God I can’t believe I’m talking about her in the past tense,”

“It’s very hard to loose someone you love,” he said, “I’ve been there.  It’s worse when you cannot be there for them.  You feel guilty for not being there, for not doing more, but in your heart you know you did what you could.  It may not seem like it now but I’m sure you did all you could,” he said softly.

“I didn’t get to tell her goodbye,” she said sobbing then, “I never got to tell her how much l loved her, how much she meant to me.  She wasn’t supposed to die first.  She was the baby.  If anything it should have been me,”

“Kay,” he said softly touching her shoulder, “Kayla, come on,” he gripped her elbow in his hand and she turned to him, “Hey,” he said softly, “Come here,”

“No,” she said, “I can’t, we hardly know each other,”

“Come here,” he said drawing her close.  He drew her into his arms and she slipped her arms around him suddenly as the tears spilled forth.  He just held her close as she sobbed against him letting all her pain and fear come out.  He stroked her hair as she cried and he just held her quietly until she stopped.  She drew back from him and an embarrassed look crept up on her face.

“Oh,” she said looking at the wet spot on his jacket, “Oh I’m so sorry,” she said wiping it with the handkerchief.

He was wearing a soft brown suede jacket with matching pants and a white t-shirt.  He watched her as she took the handkerchief and tried to dry the spot on the suede.  He couldn’t help but notice her with her auburn hair pulled back from her face, cascading in deep curls over her shoulders.  She wore a simple black turtleneck and a gray pleated skirt that showed off her long legs.  She blushed when she met his gaze and found him staring at her intently.

“I am sorry,” she said.

“It’s all right,”

“No, this is suede,” she said, “I’ve ruined your jacket,”

“It’s just a jacket,” he said, “It can be replaced,” she looked in his eyes again and wanted to melt, “Where are you staying in New York?”

“I’m…I’m staying at the Plaza,” she said.

“Is someone meeting you?”

“No,” she said, “I caught such a late flight.  I was going to take a cab to the hotel,”

“They’ll have a car waiting for me,” he said, “Would you allow me to escort you to the hotel?”

“I don’t want to be a bother,” she said, “I feel like I’ve imposed on you enough,”

“Don’t be silly,” he said, “I’m staying at the Plaza as well.  It’s not as if I’m going out of my way,”

“Thank you,” she said looking at him, “That’s very nice of you,”

“No problem,” he said with a soft smile.  He rested his chin on the palm of his hand as he looked at her, “So, do you have any other thoughts on my acting career?”

They talked the rest of the flight and she felt as if they were the only two people on the plane.  Just before they landed he returned to his seat to collect his things.  He rejoined her and helped her get her bag down from the overhead compartment.  As they left the plan a man was standing there waiting for him.  He approached the driver and addressed him.

“Could you please see to Miss Smith’s bag?” he said to the man, “Make sure they’re delivered to the Plaza,”

“Of course Mr. Fehr,” said the man.

“Come,” he said offering his arm to her.

She took it and he led her to the waiting car.  He helped her in and soon they were on their way to the hotel.  He couldn’t help but notice how tired she now looked.  He knew a good cry could do that to a person.  When they arrived at the hotel he helped her far from the car and escorted her inside where they both registered.

Her bags were there and he escorted her to the elevators.  Her floor was first but he stepped off with her and walked her to her room.  He took her key and unlocked the door for her before letting her slip by him.  The bellboy took her bags in and set them on the bed.  Before she could stop him Oded slipped the man a tip.

“How long will you be in town?” he asked her as she walked over to him.

“I’m not sure yet.  At least until Friday,” she said.

“Then perhaps I will see you again,” he said taking her hand in his.  He pressed her key into her palm gently as he raised her hand to his lips, “You know where to find me if you need to talk,” he kissed her hand gently before releasing it, “I hope tonight you are blessed with sweet dreams,”

“Thank you,” she said trembling, “Goodnight Oded,”

“Goodnight Kayla,” he said softly.  He turned and left her room closing the door behind him.

She went to her bags and unpacked her suit and such.  Finally she pulled on her favorite silk nightshirt and slipped under the cool covers of her bed.  She smiled slightly thinking about him.  He was just as sweet and sensitive as she thought he would be.  She soon drifted off to sleep.

Despite her nights rest the next day was enough to set Kay on edge.  It started the moment she walked through her mother’s front door.  They were fighting over wither they should have the casket open or closed.  Of all the ridiculous things to fight about, she stepped out side for a breath of fresh air.  She found herself thinking of him again.  She couldn’t help but think how nice it would be to have a friendly face to look at right then.

The whole day made her crazy and she was ready to slap half her family silly.  She couldn’t help thinking how Jillian would react to the whole mess.  Finally everything was taken care of.  The wake would be on Thursday the funeral the following day and she couldn’t wait to get home.  She had originally planned on staying but with the constant bickering she was ready to explode.

Her head was actually pounding in her head as she entered the lobby of the hotel.  She was rubbing her temple and it didn’t even register that someone had called her name.  She turned to see the Concierge coming over to her.

“Miss Smith,” he said smiling at her, “Mr. Fehr asked me to deliver this to you,” he said handing her a note.

“Thank you,” she said taking it from him.  She headed towards the elevators and stepped on before unfolding the note.

“Dearest Kayla, I could not stop thinking about you today.  I hope you are well and I just wanted to know that I was thinking of you during this most difficult time.  If you need to talk you know where to find me.  Sweet dreams.  Oded,”

She smiled as she pressed the note to her chest.  He was so sweet but she was simply too drained to call him.  “Maybe after the wake,” she thought as rode up to her room.

The next day was an emotional roller coaster for Kay as she stood in the funeral home.  She had been given sometime alone with her sister before they opened the doors to the others.  She took the time to say the goodbye she never got to say, and fresh tears spilled down her cheek as she saw her sister’s bracelet on her wrist.

She looked so peaceful as if she had just lain down to sleep.  She was releaved to be able to remember her sister as the beautiful young woman she had been, instead of the frail shell she had become.  She soon joined the others and it was an endless stream of friends and relatives.  Kay thought her feet would go numb as she stood there shaking hands and getting hugged.

Finally as the people started to leave she picked up her purse and slipped out the door.  She took a cab back to the hotel and was just crossing the lobby to the elevators; she was ready for a nice hot bath.  As the doors opened there he stood, black suit with a white dress shirt and deep red tie, his short hair neatly styled.

“Kayla,” he said as he stepped off, “I was just thinking about you,”

“Really?” she said looking at him.

“Yes,” he said, “I was just going out to dinner, have you eaten?”

“Uh, no,” she said, “I haven’t had much of an appetite as of late,”

“Would you care to join me?” he said, “I hate to eat alone,”

“I don’t think I’d be very good company,” she said looking away from him.

“Hey,” he said reaching out and gently grasping her elbow in his hand, “Kayla, you need to eat.  Please, my treat,”

“I don’t know,” she said.

“Do you want me to beg, because I’ll do it.  I can get on my knees right here if you wish.  You can go home to Chicago and tell all you’re friends that you made Oded Fehr beg in the lobby of the Plaza hotel,” he said.  He started to move as if he was going to kneel.

“No,” she said reaching out for him, “Don’t, you win.  All right, I’ll have dinner with you,”

“Good,” he smiled.  He offered him his arm, “Shall we?”

She took it as he escorted her outside to the waiting car.  He helped her in and soon they were on their way.  He saw her reach down and rub her ankles as they rode.  She was wearing a simple black dress that flattered her body, with a bolero style jacket over it.  Her high-heeled pumps were clearly the source of her discomfort.  When they arrived at the restaurant he helped her from the car and took her inside.  They were escorted to a private booth.  They sat down and Kay looked over the menu.

“I want you to order anything you wish,” he said.

“Thank you,” she said, “You’re very generous,” They ordered their meals and he persuaded her to talk over dinner, “I just don’t understand my family.  I mean my baby sister is dead and their arguing over wither or not the casket should be open,”

“Everyone deals with grief their own way,” he said, “Sounds like your family is squabbling as a way of avoiding the pain,”

“Well I can’t take much more of this,” she said, “I just…”

“Just what,” he said.

“I feel like I’m going numb inside,” she said, “When I first heard I was in shock.  I’ve been scared, sad, and angry, I’ve been through the denial and everything, now I just feel numb.  I can’t feel anything anymore,”

“You have to give yourself time,” he said, “You’re mind is still shuffling through all that’s happened, processing what you’re going through.  It takes time to heal after a lose such as this,”

“I know,” she said quietly.

They ate and after their plates were cleared he looked over at her.  She smiled softly as a smile spread across his full lips.  He could see the day’s worries still on her face and decided it was best if he took her back to the hotel.  Before he could suggest it however she spoke.

“Do you dance?” she asked.

“Depends on what you call dancing,” he said looking at her.

“Can you sway to a slow song?” she asked.

“Yes,” he said, “Are you up for that?  I mean you looked like you’re feet were hurting you before?”

“I’ve been sitting here the whole time with my shoes off,” she smiled, “Do you think they’d mind if I left them off?”

“The worst they could do is ask us to leave,” he said sliding from the booth, “Come on,” he held his hand out to her and she took it as he led her onto the dance floor.

He drew her close as she draped an arm around his shoulder.  He smelled wonderful as he hugged her to him.  The smell of his cologne mingling with his own manly scent was intoxicating as she breathed in deeply.  She let her other arm move and wrap around him from the other side pressing her body to his.  They swayed to the music and a shiver ran up her spine as she felt his strong hands run over her back and under her jacket.  She turned her head, her forehead pressing into the nap of his neck as they danced.

She wasn’t sure why she decided to look at him just then but she did.  He gave her another soft smile as she looked at him and he suddenly stopped dancing.  A tremble shot through her as she saw his brown eyes darken in an instant and he leaned down to her.  His lips touched hers sending tiny shockwaves through her body, making all the hairs on her neck and arms stand up.  His lips were soft and warm as he kissed her gently, tenderly.  He pulled back to look at her seeing the desire in her eyes.

“I should take you back,” he said softly.

She only nodded as he led her from the dance floor.  He paid the check and she grabbed her shoes as they headed out.  She was silent in the car, but it spoke volumes between them.  She could feel it in the air between them.  It was the same feeling she’d experienced at a child when a storm was coming up.  The hairs on her body standing at attention, the air charged to the point that she felt as if a lightening bolt could jump from her own body and pierce the sky.

Once at the hotel he escorted her inside neither one of them speaking.  They stepped onto the elevator and although he gripped her hand in his still neither one spoke.  She stepped off on her floor and he followed her waiting for her to open that door.  She stepped inside her grip tightening on his hand, a silent invitation to join her.  He closed the door behind him and turned to her, seeing the unmistakable flames of passion burning in her eyes.  He reached for her cupping her face in his hands.

“Kayla,” he said softly, “I will show you pleasure such as you’ve never known,”

“Yes,” she said in a soft whisper.

He pulled her to him pressing his lips to hers once more.  She gripped his waist as he kissed her.  He stroked her lips softly with his tongue seeking entrance to her sweet mouth.  She parted her lips and moaned as he slipped his tongue into her waiting mouth.  She tasted just as sweet as he had hoped and she moaned again as he explored her mouth slowly.  She gripped his waist again as she felt him move taking her with him.  He backed her towards the bed as she clung to him never breaking the kiss until he reached the bed.

He moved his hands down to the collar of her coat gripping it and sliding it off her shoulders.  He moved it down her arms to her elbows and then gripped it again pinning her arms to her sides.  His mouth left hers and she gasped as his lips moved over the nape of her neck up to her ear, his hot breath sending chills through her.  He kissed from one side to the other before releasing his hold on her and sliding the jacket off.

With her hands free she quickly moved to slide his jacket off his body.  She shoved it down his arms and let it fall to the floor before she went for his tie.  She tugged it loose as a soft smile played on his lips.  She untied and slipped it from around his neck before she let it fall to the floor as well.  She started unbuttoning his shirt as she felt him twine her hair around his long fingers.  She undid each button placing soft kisses on his smooth chest.  He tasted wonderful, and in combination with his scent it was making her mind swim.

She pulled his shirt from the waist of his slacks and he stopped her before she could go any further.  He turned her around his hands finding the zipper of her dress and drawing it down.  He took the soft material in his hands and drew it down off her silky shoulders before moving it down her body and letting it pool around her ankles.  She stepped from the dress and instinctively crawled up the bed.

She lay there and looked at him as he reached for his belt.  She watched him as he stripped it from his pants and tossed it to the floor.  There was something so erotic about watching him undress, the way his muscles flexed with each little movement of his body.  He unzipped his slacks and slid them over his strong hips letting them fall down his legs.  She smiled seeing his black silk boxers that he was wearing.  He stepped from his slacks and kicked them aside before crawling up the bed to her.

He rested his weight against her as she pulled him close.  They kissed again and soon he was moving down her soft body.  He cupped her breast in his large hand as she pressed against him.  He teased her through the silken material bringing the sensitive tissue to a hard peak beneath his touch.  She moaned lightly as he caressed her.  He soon unlatched her bra slipping it from her body and gazing at her lovingly.

He dipped his head and took a sensitive bud in his mouth.  He sucked it gently, before teasing it with his tongue, and nipping it with his lips.  He took his time fully exploring and caressing the soft mound before him.  He moved to the other repeating his slow explorations as she pressing against him.  Kay could feel her arousal pooling within her, the throbbing between her legs pacing the rhythm of her heart.  Never before had she felt such pure ecstasy and they were only getting started.

He moved down her slowly avoiding where she most wanted to be touched.  His lips grazed the edge of her lace-trimmed nylons and he gripped one gently in his hands.  As he slowly drew it down her leg he placed more feather light kisses on her skin.  He moved to the other leg repeating his actions as she moaned and sighed.  Finally he moved between her legs nuzzling her through the silken material.  He could feel her wetness through her thin panties.  He gripped them in his hands and drew them down as she lifted her hips.

He moved up again and she was trembling as she felt his soft touch.  His kisses were light as his lips traced over the inside of her thighs moving ever closer to that final destination.  She jumped at his touch and felt her breath catch as he exposed that most sensitive jewel and drank of her sweet nectar.  She drove her fingers into his short hair as he bestowed on her that most intimate of kisses.  Her whole body quivered and shook as he explored her deeply, thoroughly, bringing her so close to that mind-shattering end, however he would not push her over it just yet.

He moved from her shoving his boxers over his strong hips freeing his erection as she laid waiting for him.  He gripped her hips in his hands guiding himself into her warmth.  He slipped in easily filling her so completely as she moaned with pleasure.  Her liquid heat surrounded him now, her body clasping him tightly as he remained buried within her.  He slowly began to move within her, her body responding instantly to him.

With each thrust she met him as she moaned and reached for him.  He kept it slow for a while, and then lowered himself to his elbows as she began to demand more from him.  She clutched at his strong back as he began to go faster, plunging his full length into her eager body.  Her cries became louder as he thrusted into her each stroke taking her higher then the last.  She clutched at his hard buttocks molding her hands to him as he moved against her.

Finally she felt that tell tale tingle as her body wound up tight.  With the next hard thrust she splintered apart beneath him cry out his name as she arched hard against his body.  She felt his warmth deep within her as he lowered himself to her embrace.

She was shaking in his arms as he moved from her.  He drew her close and she hugged him tight as she cried in his arms.  He didn’t speak he simply held her close, caressing her back with his hand, stroking her hair.  She soon felt her body relax as sleep swept over her.

She woke with a start, sitting up in her bed.  The room was dimly lit and she looked could see it was still dark out.  She turned then and let out a soft gasp seeing her bed was empty.  She went to reach for the pillow next to her when she heard a familiar voice.

“He’s gone,” she said.  Kay looked up to see a woman in white appear at the foot of her bed.

“Jill,” she gasped, “What’s going on?”

“I had to let you know that I’m all right,” she said, “And to let you know you will be too,”

“I don’t understand,” said Kay.

“I’m fine now Kay.  There’s no more pain, no fear, only peace,”

“Jill,”

“I’ve been watching you Kay.  You’ve been beating yourself up and even though I’ve passed over it hurts me to see you this way.  I’ve seen your pain, your frustration, and I’ve seen you slipping into this abyss.  I couldn’t allow that to happen to you,”

“Jill there’s so much I wanted to tell you,” said Kay as tears spilled down her cheeks.

“I know,” said Jill smiling softly at her, “I know you loved me Kay, and I know you wanted to be with me.  You always were,” said Jill holding out her hand.  There was her bracelet sparkling around her wrist, “And I’ll always be with you, in your heart.  Keep me there and I’ll never truly be gone,”

“But why?  Why did you send him?  Why this?” she asked.

“My gift to you.  You were going numb Kay, and I couldn’t let that happen.  I knew the only way to bring you back was to give you your hearts desire.  I had to let you experience something so intense, so pleasurable that you would have no choice but to let yourself feel it.  What better then one night with the man of your dreams,” she smiled softly.

“Oh God he’s married,” she gasped.  It hadn’t occurred to her until just then.

“He’s not married here, this is the land of fantasy of dream.  The man you were with only exists here because it was what you needed to bring you back.  If you were to slip into that abyss Kay you would be no better off then I was there.  I could not move forward knowing you were nothing more then an empty shell, wandering through life.  For that reason I brought you here,”

“I’m dreaming, the whole thing was a dream,”

“You have relieved your trip experiencing the comfort you so desperately needed and did not receive.  Now, I have one last gift for you, my loving sister,” she said drawing close.

“What?” asked Kay quietly.

“The gift of inner peace,” said Jill as she reached out for her sister.

It was as if a warm wave washed over her and she slumped back into the bed.  Her mind was filled with images of her sister.  Trips to Radio City Music Hall, riding the Stanton Island ferry, trips to Coney Island with their grandparents, she could feel nothing but love and joy as the scenes played out.  She saw Christmas’ and birthday parties, her sisters sweet sixteen.  A soft smile spread across her lips as she drifted into a deep and peaceful slumber.

~*~

The next day after her sister was laid to rest Kay lingered at the cemetery as her family headed back to the house.  Soon she was alone and she stood quietly looking at her sister’s headstone.  A tear slid down her cheek but it wasn’t a tear of sadness.  She kissed her fingers and touched them to her sister’s name as she bent down next to the stone.  She looked at her bracelet.

“Love is like a violin.  The music may stop now and then, but the strings remain forever.  Forever Jill, you’ll always be in my heart,” she said softly, “Always, I love you, and thank you,”

Kay stood and walked to her car.  She had her bags, her ticket and was ready to go home.  As she drove out of the cemetery and headed to the airport that peaceful feeling stayed with her.  She would only remember the good times they shared and hold onto the knowledge that she was in a better place and that someday they would see each other again.

The End
