        Neighbors

        By Lilybird

        Scene 2:

Finally the last box. She had just climbed the stairs for the last time and shut her door slumping against the wall. The long drive had tired her out to begin with, and now she had all this unpacking to do. And she started work Monday. "Uggh," she thought, she should have arranged to come a few days earlier, but couldn't bear to move away from her family any sooner than she had to. She had grown up in Minnesota, gone to college there and then graduate school. Now she had to brave the world. Her education had gone as far as it could and she had gotten lucky that her advisor had helped her land this first teaching position. She had flown out for her interview at the college and fell in love with the city. She loved the Minnesota seasons and everyone she met told her Vancouver would feel like home, only with the benefits of the ocean and the mountains. She had spent only a week looking for a place to live and although the town house was more than she could really afford it was furnished, a huge bonus since all of her furniture in graduate school had been cheap hand me downs and she had no problem leaving it all behind. But even better, the town house was close to the college. She liked the idea of being able to bike to work like she had in graduate school. Plus it had both an indoor and outdoor pool. She couldn't wait to go swimming, coming from the land of 10,000 lakes she had always been able to swim like a fish and she hoped the pool in the backyard wouldn't be crowded with kids. But that would have to come later, the most she would let herself enjoy now would be a quick shower before she started unpacking. She found a box with some towels and grabbing her radio, she headed upstairs. She turned on the water and found a radio station to her liking. Slipping out of her clothes she stood for a long time in the hot water, letting it pound on the back of her neck. That was probably why she never heard the doorbell.
