        Neighbors

        By Lilybird

        Scene 5:

The rest of the evening for her went quickly. She dressed and then started sorting boxes. She unpacked boxes of clothes, towels, sheets, kitchen utensils, dishes, and books, boxes and boxes of books. Her mother was always telling her to get her head out of her books, that she'd never meet anyone if she sat alone reading all of the time. "And my god," she had exclaimed. "Couldn't she find anything more exciting to read than science books?" Her mother never seemed to understand that she enjoyed the time by herself, she had known she wanted to be a scientist since she was a little girl, and besides, time spent alone was better than time wasted on someone who ultimately wouldn't find her attractive anyway, she convinced herself. They were her refuges. And she had brought all of them to Vancouver.

She kept herself as busy as she could. Because every time she paused or slowed down, her mind would slip to "him". That smile, those eyes, the way his jeans hugged his ass. Then she would chuckle; she had to admit that his ears stuck out a little. But it made him look boyish; offsetting the gray she had noticed sprinkled in his temples. She would shake her head to get him out of it and open another box. It was only as the evening grew later that she was too tired to fight it anymore. The image of his smile swam in her mind. "Swimming!" she exclaimed. That's what she needed. She'd go to the pool and swim these thoughts out of her head. Then she'd sleep well, she thought, out of fear she wouldn't admit, that once in her dreams she wouldn't be able to get him out. She pulled her suit out of the dresser and grabbed a towel.
