Tales From Sha-Hair-Azad:
These Walls Can Talk
By Najya Yasirah
Chapter 10: Diva
Reyjah was talking to someone from the orchestra. Antoine groaned. Someone else gave her a microphone. She turned it on and it made a horrible screeching sound. “Oops, sorry folks!” she said. Antoine hid his face. “Good Evening Ladies and Gentlemen, you all look a little bored, tonight,” she declared. “What is going on!” said Mr. Giovanni, to Eric, the waiter. “Bellissima?” said Eric as he almost dropped his tray. “Well, I’m gonna sing and dance, and…you’re gonna like it!” she said confidently. The band played Debalah Morgan’s “Dance With Me,” which incidentally had the same beat as “Hernando’s Hideaway” from the musical,’The Pajama Game’,just with a little more bass. “ Oh come and dance with me my baby/Let’s dance till we go crazy/the night is young and are we/let’s make love and dance the night away…”
Oh come and dance with me, my baby Let's dance, till we go crazy The night is young and so are we Let's make love and dance the night away (Verse 1) What I really wanna do Is just dance with you And feel your body tight Show ya how to do it right I can show you every move I know just what to do Each step will feel so fine One dance and you'll be mine So baby when we hit the floor You'll be asking for more Let's make love and dance the night away (Chorus) Oh come and dance with me, my baby Let's dance, till we go crazy The night is young and so are we Let's make love and dance the night away (Verse 2) Oh put your hand in mine Promise I'll take my time We'll dance from head to toe I can dance fast or slow Baby look into my eyes Let the music hypnotize Let our bodies synchronize One dance and you'll be mine So baby when we hit the floor You'll be asking for more Let's make love and dance the night away (Chorus) Oh come and dance with me, my baby Let's dance, till we go crazy The night is young and so are we Let's make love and dance the night away (Bridge) Oh when it comes to dancin' I know how to move When it comes to passion I know just what to do I feel the music inside I feel like I am alive The tempo is right Let's make love (Chorus) Oh come and dance Let's dance The night Let's make love and dance the night away (Chorus)X 4
People immediately beelined to the dance floor and began doing the tango. Reyjah was dancing as she sang. She swiveled her hips and did other sexy moves. Her dress was very adaptable. Her attitude was very sensual. Antoine thought she was going to do something obscene with the microphone. She had an amazing voice box. She sang her heart out, her voice touched each and every person in the restaurant. Her pretty face, elegant stance and awesome vocal range hypnotized the men. The women wondered where she found that wonderful, blue dress and who her personal trainer was. The lights from flashbulbs were endless. “Who is she, she is so beautiful!” “Where did she come from?” She ended the song with a note so high, champagne glasses were broken. The audience gave her a standing ovation. She immediately followed with “Dreaming of You”, by Selena:
Late at night when all the world is sleeping
I stay up and think of you and I wish on a star
that somewhere you are thinking of me too...
Cause I'm dreaming of you tonight
'Til tomorrow I'll be holding you tight!
And there's nowhere in the world I'd rather be
than here in my room, dreaming about you and me
Wonder if you ever see me and I wonder if you know I am there
If you looked in my eyes would you see what's inside?
Would you even care?
I just wanna hold you close but so far
All I have are dreams of you
So I wait for the day and the courage to say
how much I love you.
I'll Be dreaming of you tonight
'Til tomorrow I'll be holding you tight!
And there's nowhere in the world I'd rather be
than here in my room, dreaming about you and me
(ahh ahh)
corazon...
I can't stop dreaming of you...
No puedo dejar pensar en ti
I can't stop dreaming...
Como te necesito
I can't stop dreaming of you!
Mi Amor, come te extrano
Late at night when all the world is sleeping
I stay up and think of you
And I still can't believe that you came up to me
and said "I Love you!"
I Love you too!
And now I'm dreaming of you tonight
'TIl tomorrow and for all my life
And there's nowhere in the world I'd rather be
Than here in my room dreaming with you endlessly!
Mr. Giovanni rushed over to Antoine’s table. Eric, the waiter, was on his heels. “Mr. Laconte,” said Mr. Philip Giovanni. “Antoine stood up. “Mr. Giovanni,” he said. “What is the meaning of this, and who is that woman?” “Please, let me apologize, I told her…” “Apologize? She is the breath of fresh air that this place needs ,”said Philip. Eric sighed in relief. “She is beautiful,” said Philip. Reyjah received yet another standing ovation. “Well, everyone, it’s been real, but I’m a little hungry…thank you so much!” She blew a kiss to the crowd and walked down the stage. As she walked to her table, men whistled at her. “Mr. Laconte, what’s going on?” she asked when she saw Mr. Giovanni. “Reyjah Bennett, Philip Giovanni.” Philip kissed Reyjah’s hand. He reminded her of Robert DeNiro. She wondered if he also liked black women. “Ms. Bennett, I just wanted to thank you. Your performance was wonderful,” he said looking her up and down. Her dress was the talk of the town. “Thank you, sir,” she said. “If you don’t mind, I am really, really hungry,” she said. Eric quickly pulled her chair out for her. “Thank you,” she said. “Ms. Bennett, I would like for you to sing here more often,” said Philip. “Mr. Giovanni, can I get back to you on that? I promise, I’ll find you before I leave tonight,” she pleaded. “Of course, Eric, bring them their food, pronto!” Eric scurried back to the kitchen. Mr. Giovanni was right behind him. She took a sip of water. “I guess you showed me,” said Antoine as he sat back down. “I’ll talk junk when I’ve been fed,” she said.
