    Chapter 27: She’s Not Wearing Blue


    “Rey Rey!” said Akilah as she walked in holding Antoine’s hand. Akilah was cute with chocolate skin like Reyjah’s and a cute, a-line bob that was streaked with lighter shades of brown.  She was the bartender and owner of Kamikaze.  “Oh, this is my best friend, Antoine,” said Reyjah. “Ant, this is Akilah.” They shook hands. “Have I seen you before, Antoine?” asked Akilah. “I don’t think so,” said Antoine. “Did you go see ‘Mummy Returns, Akilah?” asked Reyjah, grimacing. “Yeah!” said Akilah. “He looks like…” “Don’t say it, girl…drama!!!” said Reyjah, squeezing Antoine’s hand. “Oh, okay,” said Akilah understanding.   “You’re on in 10 minutes, Rey” she added. “Damn, I just walked in, can I get some Buffalo wings?” asked Reyjah. “After, you sing-3 songs in a row,” said Akilah. “Bosses orders, you owe us!” “AAAh okay! Damn!” said Reyjah in laughing defeat. She led Antoine to a table in the front. “Good luck,” he whispered, kissing her on the nose. “Try to behave yourself,” she whispered back. She ran up onstage to talk to the band.  Akilah brought Antoine a glass of champagne.  “She’s cute, isn’t she?” she asked.  “Thank you,” he said in reference to the champagne. “Yeah, she’s cute.”  “So, you like Reyjah , huh?” she asked looking at her pretty friend as she prepared herself.  “I can tell by the way you look at her,” she smiled. “And by the way she acts, she likes you, too.” Akilah walked back to the bar. Antoine sipped his champagne. Soon, the lights dimmed. “Ladies and gentlemen, Kamikaze would like to present, LA’s gain and NY’s loss, Reyjah Bennett. The first song Reyjah sang was Prince’s “When Doves Cry.” He could see the passion and emotion in her face as she sang:

    Every now and then, she would look at Antoine and he would nod in approval. Her second song was “ I’m Like a Bird,” by Nelly Furtado. She looked directly at him when she sang that one. He could feel her blue eyes bearing into him. That’s when he knew. “Tonight’s the night,” he said drinking the last of his champagne.   For her finale, Reyjah sang “Survivor” by Destiny’s Child.  Antoine was astounded by her ability to conquer different genres of music. Her voice was so malleable as well as her body. He loved the way she swiveled her hips when she danced. When she was finished, she received a standing ovation. She bowed, “Thank you LA, I love you,” she said. She blew a kiss to Antoine.
